Therapeutic Ultrasound, not to be confused with diagnostic ultrasound, is another commonly utilized soft tissue modality in our offices. An acoustic wand produces thousands of pulsed sound waves that are focalized a few centimeters away from the surface of the wand. As the sound waves pass through tissue, they cause cells of the tissue to begin to shake against each other which in turn leads to the production of heat in form of friction. This is focalized heat that can penetrate further into tissue then by just adding superficial hot packs. The heat produced can reach deep into muscles and sometimes joints in order to warm the structures and facilitate movement (pliability) of them. Warm any soft tissue and it becomes easier to move (pre-workout warm-up, therapeutic hot baths).
