Kinesio Taping is a technique where strips of tape with elastic strands are stretched in specific patterns for specific injuries. The elastic component of the tape when contracting pulls up on the skin which results in relieving pressure of the underlying fascia (connective tissue) and therefore facilitates lymphatic drainage (removing swelling from the area). Another benefit of the application of Kinesio Taping to an injured area is increasing neuromuscular re-education. The tape stimulates receptors in the affected area that are likely numbed by pressure from adjacent swelling post injury. Just the tape being stretched over the area “wakes up” nerves there and helps return normal proprioception (the body’s perception of where certain structures are in space and in reference to each other). The end product is a decrease in swelling and pain while there’s an increase in overall structural performance.
